Residents are relieved as plans to shut a 150-year-old level-crossing were put on hold.
Railtrack, the company which operates the main train line between Colchester and London, said earlier this year is was proposing to shut the crossing at Chitts Hill, Lexden.
But people in the area say that would mean traffic would have to be diverted on to unsuitable country lanes.
A group of residents have been preparing a petition opposing Railtrack's proposals.
So far, they have quizzed almost 200 households and, apart from two people who said they weren't fussed, there has been a unanimous vote against closing the crossing.
The crossing is a popular cut-through between West Bergholt and Lexden, and the A12.
Railtrack said no funding was available for its plans and it was unlikely any changes would be made before 2010.
