A primary school site will be considered for community use once pupils move into their new premises, it has been confirmed.
Harwich County Primary School is moving from its site in Main Road, Harwich, to Barrack Lane.
That will mean its current home is left empty.
The nearby Ark Family Centre is cramped and is interested in moving into the old school.
However, there are concerns the site may not be retained for community use.
Mike Barnett, spokesman for Essex County Council, said: "With any new development it follows a certain process which means when the new building has been completed, the county council then considers whether there is any other council service or facility for the public the site could be used for."
However, he stressed any investigation in to the future of the site had not yet begun.
Talks are taking place between the Colchester Catalyst Charity and councillors in the hope of securing the site for the Ark Centre.
