It was a quiet night for Army crews standing in for striking north and mid Essex firefighters.

Callouts last night were mainly to minor incidents or false alarms. Yesterday an unknown caller telephoned a radio station saying Tiptree retained fire station was going to have its locks glued up.

But the firefighters who work from there who are not striking checked the station and the threat had not been carried out.

Army personnel were called to a false alarm at Chelmsford's St John Hospital.

The green goddess crews went to the hospital in Wood Street at 10pm last night in response to the call but it was a faulty fire alarm and they took no action.

Two green goddesses were called out after smoke was spotted coming from a house window in Hazell Avenue in the Shrub End area of Colchester at 12.45pm yesterda and put out the blaze.

The soldiers, who are standing in for striking firefighters, put out the fire and made sure the house was safe. The fire had not caused any serious damage.

A man living at the house did not want to be named but said the crews had done a fantastic job and the fire had not caused serious damage.
