A Southend doorman today said violence in the town has not got worse ... it's always been this bad.

The ex-military policeman said despite two recent alleged murders, most of the trouble in Southend is caused by well-known thugs.

He claims the only way to stop them is for police to take a tougher stance and post more officers outside pubs at closing times.

The doorman, who asked not to be named, said he and his colleagues now check eight out of 10 people who come through their doors for weapons.

He added: "Most of us wear these bulletproof vests now but it's more to protect us from being stabbed.

"You can check all you like for weapons but we still sell glass bottles behind the bar and maybe something should be done about that."

Suggestions at a recent meeting of club owners and landlords called by Southend's Chief Supt Mick Thwaites, included doormen taking on more responsibility for what happens on the streets outside.

However, the sceptical 30 year-old doorman said: "We can't be expected to be some kind of guardian angels."
