A new policing team has hailed its first week a success - after arresting a man in connection with 22 car crimes.

Sgt Ian Collins, who is heading the newly formed proactive community unit, told how the team has enjoyed early success in the Rayleigh division.

He said: "The results we have obtained even at this early stage are very pleasing indeed.

"We now have the level of resourcing where we can respond quickly to good information we receive from the public.

"The work we do is very intelligence led and we need the support of the public to enable us to target offenders quickly.

"However, we have also not lost sight of the need to tackle basic quality of life issues such as nuisance."

In its first week - last week - the unit questioned a 20-year-old male, from Westcliff, in relation to 22 car crime related offences.

The man is now on police bail pending further inquiries in relation to the motor vehicle offences.

Anyone who can help the proactive community unit by passing on information they have about crime can call officers directly at Rayleigh police station on 01268 775533.
