A pet shop could be facing closure after 30 years if a housing development gets the go-ahead.
Tiptree Pet and Aquatic Centre, in Church Road, Tiptree, will not get its lease renewed if permission is granted to build 12 homes in front of it.
Pet shop owner Geoff Hughes believes shops need to be protected to ensure the future of high street shopping in the village.
He said: "Everybody in Tiptree is against this. The overwhelming opinion I am hearing is the high street in Tiptree needs protecting."
Plans to go before Colchester Council today, outline the demolition of the former Dawn to Dusk convenience store, which closed about eight years ago.
It would be replaced with 12 houses with garages.
