Plans for a major block of 92 flats have been given the green light.

However, the scheme for the site at the corner of Christchurch Road and Southchurch Road, Southend, was described by Graham Longley (Lib Dem, Blenheim Park) as "yet another prison development".

The site is partly derelict and the remainder is occupied by furniture-maker Coopers which is planning to relocate to another site.

The new scheme would be three to six storeys high and include office accommodation.

Mr Longley told the council's development control committee he believed it was over-development of the site with more flats than were needed.

He was also concerned the proposed offices would not prove to be viable and would eventually be turned into residential development putting more pressure on the area.

However, Ron Price (Con, Prittlewell) said he was frequently asked about small modern office space in the town in his work for South Essex Chamber of Commerce.

He added: "All too often we have to tell them there is none available as ours are often too large and not suitable for modern requirements."

Members agreed the application.
