Police were today probing the cause of a crash which left a man dead in the obliterated remains of a high-powered sports car.
The driver apparently lost control of the £65,000 Audi on the old A130 near Howe Green and ploughed into trees and bushes.
He died instantly. Firemen and traffic police called to the scene at about 9.45pm yesterday were shocked by the scene of carnage which greeted them. The car had split into three on impact with the trees.
An Essex Police spokesman said of the accident: "The car is believed to have gone out of control and left the road hitting trees and hedgerows.
"The driver, a local man suffered fatal injuries."
Police would like to hear from any witnesses.
