A bus company is working with Essex Police to clamp down on vandals attacking buses in the Braintree and Witham area. Passengers lives are being put at risk by a spate of attacks where youngsters have thrown bricks, stones and other objects at moving buses.

In the latest attack, a group of children threw stones at a bus travelling along Church Road, Bocking, smashing two windows.

Four children aged about ten or 11 were seen in the act before they ran away.

No-one was injured.

Colin Riches, spokesman for First, said: "It is a problem for us throughout Essex and something we have to guard against, unfortunately if a bus is attacked travelling along a route there is not a lot we can do.

"We are, however, working with Essex Police to educate children in schools about how they should behave where public transport is concerned.

"These children are putting lives in danger and they need to realise that. If a driver gets hit by something, or his windscreen smashes, the bus could crash putting all the passengers' lives at risk."
