A new £200,000 automated pay on exit car park system which caused chaos when it was launched at Broomfield Hospital has been halted after just one week.

The new system was introduced last week and immediately caused major traffic problems, with queues of vehicles stretching back along the hospital approach road.

Now all the car parks at Broomfield will revert to the pay and display system, but increased charges introduced to coincide with the automated system will remain.

An apology was issued this week by Mid Essex Hospitals Trust to patients, visitors and to all members of staff for the inconvenience caused.

The trust confirmed on Tuesday that the automated barrier system for the public car park at Broomfield Hospital would be withdrawn with immediate effect and the hospital will revert to the pay and display system until further notice.

Alterations will have to be carried out to the automated system before is re-introduced. "It will be necessary to install a second barrier alongside the first barrier at the entrance to the public car park, to prevent congestion at peak times of the surrounding access roads and in particular to keep the access to accident and emergency clear," said Norman Bruce, the Trust's director of estates and facilities.
