Thousands of pounds worth of mountain bikes have been stolen from sheds and garages across Chelmsford in the run up to Christmas.

Now police are warning householders to take extra care as the festive thieving season gets underway.

Five bikes valued at £4,500, including one extremely rare Cox cycle - were stolen when burglars broke into the shed of a home in Pines Road, Chelmsford, overnight on December 5.

According to the owners, the bronze Cox cycle is one of only 10 in the country.

The same night, a bike was also taken from a garage at a home in Corporation Road, and the following night a Peugeot mountain bike was amongst £1,000 worth of items taken from the garage of a home in Trent Road, Chelmsford.

Power tools worth £250 were stolen from the garage of a home in Patching Hall Lane, Chelmsford in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Inspector Chris Kilgallen of Chelmsford police said: "We would urge homeowners to take extra care to secure their sheds and garages. Shed alarms are relatively inexpensive, and anyone wanting advice can contact our crime reduction officer at Chelmsford police station."

Anyone with any information should contact Chelmsford police on 01245 491212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
