A car was left balancing in a precarious position over Clacton seafront following an accident.

An elderly woman suffered minor injuries after her red Ford Escort was involved in a collision with a parked Toyota Corolla on Marine Parade East.

Two fire crews from Clacton and one from Colchester were called to the scene at 10.24am yesterday as the Toyota teetered on the cliff edge above a 30ft drop after being forced across the pavement and through metal railings.

Sub-officer Jim Bowyer said: "There was a risk it could have gone over the edge and injured people walking along the seafront so we secured a winch before it could topple over the edge."

Firefighters spent half-an-hour securing and pulling the car back on to the road, which was closed for ten minutes.

Toyota owner, Philip Gant, of Maple Close, Clacton, said he had been walking his dog at the time of the collision.

"It was a real shock to see it like that. We normally would have finished our walk sooner, but decided to keep going a bit further."
