Pupils from a Colchester school will be glued to the television on Boxing Day to see if a classmate wins a top title.
Matthew Porter, 11, won his way through to the final of Britain's Brainiest Kids quiz on ITV.
Although the programme is pre-recorded, he is keeping the result secret.
Friends and fellow pupils at Colchester Royal Grammar School saw him appear on the small screen in the first rounds of the general knowledge quiz on Monday.
Matthew, of Coggeshall, won with a top score of 18 points.
