Firefighters battled a blaze which swept Charfleets Tyre Service, on Charfleets industrial estate, Canvey.
Crews tackling the fire from inside had to withdraw as part of the building started to collapse around them.
There were difficulties in bringing the flames under control because the building contained around 400 tyres, a gas cylinder and 30 tonnes of exhaust pipes
