Chelmsford police officers have been invited to the opening of their "sister town's" new police station in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, later this year.
The invitation came in the wake of a spontaneous visit by Sgt Jon de Vries and special constable Doug Warren.
Sgt de Vries and Spc Warren were among a delegation of officers from Essex who took part in commemorations marking the Twin Towers tragedy in September this year.
Spc Warren said: "We didn't even know it existed and then I was looking on the Internet and got in touch with the police department."
The two Essex police officers met chief of police in the American town, Ray McCusker, and town manager, Bernard Lynch, presenting them with a framed print illustrating Essex police through the ages.
The two men toured both the present police station and a new station currently under construction which is expected to open in May.
Chief McCusker invited the two men and other officers from Chelmsford to attend the official opening when a date is confirmed.
