Rail commuters using c2c have been given an early Christmas present - the price of annual season tickets is to drop by up to £40.

The fares are to be lowered across the board from January 5.

The majority of ticket prices will be slashed across the board, including single journey tickets.

The move is taking place due to the rail service operator not meeting statutory targets - therefore obliging it to lower their fares.

A spokesman said: "It's good for the consumer but the move is in response to performance and because we have not hit the agreed performance levels we are able to put the fares down."

Commuters using Chalkwell, Leigh and Benfleet are set to make the biggest savings, with the cost of an annual return to London Fenchurch Street dropping from £2,180 to £2,140.

Those travelling from Southend East, Southend Central and Westcliff will save £32 a year, as will those taking the train from Basildon, Laindon, Stanford-le-Hope and East Tilbury.

The smallest savings are to be made by those travelling the furthest, with commuters from Shoebury and Thorpe Bay having just £8 chopped off the price of their annual tickets - the price falling to £2,312.
