Motorists were left counting the cost after a spate of car crime in Braintree and surrounding villages on the same night.

Owners discovered the damage when they woke up on Friday morning.

In Rana Drive, Braintree, a Ford Transit van'swindow was removed but nothing was reported stolen.

At Westdrive Motors in Cressing Road, Braintree, the four wheels of a Ford Mondeo car for sale on the forecourt were stolen.

In Coldnailhurst Avenue, Braintree, a window on a Metro car was smashed. In Longacre Road, Cressing, the window on a Bedford van was removed and power tools stolen.

In School Road, Silver End, a window on a Volkswagen Golf car was smashed.

Power tools were also stolen from a Nissan van in Bailey Bridge Road, Braintree, after thieves removed a window and in the town's Bocking End, a Vauxhall Carlton car had its windscreen smashed.

Inspector Andrew Fusher appealed to van drivers not to leave tools in their vehicles overnight and to car owners to be extra vigilant.
