One of the county's major routes was closed last night when a lorry and five cars crashed.
The London track of the A12 Kelvedon bypass was shut for about 30 minutes while Essex Police traffic officers dealt with the aftermath and managed to move all those vehicles involved to the Rivenhall services.
Sgt Chris Tyler, of Stanway traffic police, said rather than inconvenience drivers by closing the road for up to two hours while information was gathered, it was decided to take all the vehicles off the road to the services.
A couple, from Bournemouth, were taken to Colchester General Hospital after their Citroen car was in involved in a collision with the Scania lorry.
The 55-year-old woman had a suspected broken arm and her husband has a heart condition. They were taken as a precautionary measure. There were no other hospital cases.
