South Woodham Ferrers Town Council has backed a request from police to make the town centre a non-alcohol area.
Paul Betts, chairman of the town council's environment committee, said: "The town council is in favour of the suggested action to address a problem which, if left, will escalate.
"The initiative does, however, depend for its success on a guaranteed police presence, particularly at weekends."
