Officers at Essex Trading Standards have warned shoppers to keep their festive till receipts.
They get large numbers of complaints each January from people unable to exchange unwanted presents.
But unless shoppers have a receipt, cheque stub, credit card statement or similar proof of purchase, it can be difficult to claim a refund or replacement.
