He said: "I only had seconds. There was lots of smoke and flames which were up on the ceiling and came down through the walls singeing the horses and it caught my wrist."

Mr Butler received treatment for a two-inch burn to his wrist by paramedics at the farm.

The horses, Quince and Tara, were both shaken and singed but have been seen by a vet and given the all-clear.

Two dogs died in the fire - Polo, a labrador/lurcher and Pepper, a labrador.

A car and caravan as well as farm machinery were also destroyed in the blaze. The fire was noticed by Mr Butler's daughter, Anna, 17, who heard roof tiles exploding.

The fire brigade were praised by Mr Butler as they arrived within ten minutes and tackled the fire.

Mr Butler's wife, Tanya, said: "My husband was very brave. He went straight to the barn without shoes or a coat. If he had taken any longer, we would have lost the horses."
