Detectives were today looking for witnesses to a serious assault in Benfleet which left two men in hospital.
A gang are thought to be responsible for the violence which erupted in Woodburn Close.
A police spokesman said: "It is believed that members of a group of men attacked the two victims but the motive for the attack remains unclear.
"The two injured men were taken to Southend Hospital."
One of the men, a 33-year-old from Westcliff, was transferred to Romford's Oldchurch hospital and was today still recovering from what police described as serious head injuries.
The other man, from Benfleet, was released shortly after treatment.
