Schools and churches have reacted angrily to proposed laws which would force them to apply for licences to stage live music.
People holding live performances will need to apply for a licence or face stiff penalties under the Licensing Act 2003, awaiting approval in the House of Lords
If given the go-ahead, it will affect schools and churches holding concerts and individuals booking musical entertainment for private parties.
Nick Raggett, manager of the Crowstone Christian Centre, Westcliff, said: "This seems to me to be completely unworkable and it could have huge financial implications. We hold a lot of concerts here and this is unfair and completely crazy."
Andrew Baker, headteacher of Westcliff High School for Boys, said: "I can't believe the Government which is seeking to promote the education of youngsters is going to place a barrier between schools putting on decent musical events. I just cannot believe that would be the case."
