Jobless people from Witham face a 20-mile journey when their local job centre closes for refurbishment

The centre at Iceni House, Newland Street, Witham, will close for about four weeks on January 6, to allow the work to take place.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Work and Pensions said the work was being done to turn the centre into a Job Centre Plus office.

The new integrated jobs and benefits offices are being piloted following the merger of the employment service and the benefits agency

She said for the four weeks the work was being carried out, customers of the Witham service would have to travel to Chelmsford.

"To allow the new Job Centre Plus office to provide the best service possible to customers, the work needs to be carried out which means it closing for a little while.

"While this work is taking place customers will be able to use the facilities in Chelmsford," the spokeswoman said.
