A man is recovering after burglars subjected him to a brutal attack in his home

The 30-year-old victim was confronted by two men when he answered the doorbell to his house in Peggott Close, on the Newland Springs Estate, Chelmsford.

As he opened the front door, one of the men pointed a handgun at him, which police later discovered was an imitation, and the pair forced their way into his house, hitting the man over the head with the gun and punching him.

The intruders demanded the man's car keys and after hitting him again, the victim handed over the keys to his Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor.

The attackers then ran out of the house, also taking with them the man's house keys, a credit card, DVD player and DVDs.

But the burglars did not take the car during the attack, which happened at 8.40pm on Sunday.

The victim was taken to Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital with cuts to his head, a black eye and swollen wrist but was later released.

Det Con Clive Emmet, who is investigating the attack, said: "This type of incident is rare for Chelmsford.

"It was a vicious and unnecessary attack and these men must be regarded as dangerous."

The men are both described as white and aged between 18 and 20.
