A plea has gone out to the people of South Essex to pound the streets of the capital and help raise money for charity.

Headway Essex, which cares for the survivors of brain injury and their families, is looking for volunteers to run the London Marathon.

And if applicants are unsuccessful in obtaining a place on their own for the spectacle, the Colchester-based charity will part-pay for each competitor.

The group has a limited number of golden bonds which can be used to secure entry - so long as the competitor raises £800 minimum in sponsorship.

Mary Beverley, fundraising officer at Headway Essex, said: "What a great way to regain your pre-Christmas lean shape.

"We can supply sponsorship forms, literature about Headway Essex, a running top and bottle of foot massage oil!"
