Homeowners were furious today after knife-wielding yobs slashed tyres on more than 30 cars in a spree of destruction in Southend.

Residents in Chestnut Grove, Sycamore Grove and Byron Avenue discovered their tyres had been slashed overnight.

Another group of streets in the town, St Helen's Road, Avenue Terrace and Burdett Avenue, were also targeted.

Alan Barclay, 35, of Chestnut Grove, said the vandals had deliberately slashed two tyres on many of the cars to prevent owners simply putting on a spare tyre.

He added: "We found both our van and other car had been done.

"My wife and a neighbour walked up and down the streets and reckon about 33 cars were done in all.

"It's disgusting. They are just mindless thugs with nothing better to do.

"We've got no idea why it happened - there has been no trouble whatsoever."
