Dean Gerken could soon be donning the three lions of England.

The 17-year-old in-form Colchester United goalkeeper is catching the eye of the national coaches and is in line for an England Under-18 trial.

Gerken, who hails from Rayleigh near Southend, has earned his big chance after a number of outstanding performances for the young U's, culminating in a magnificent man-of-the-match display in the recent FA Youth Cup tie against Arsenal.

Gunners coach Don Howe was left raving about his performance in the 2-0 defeat at Highbury and after phone calls to Ray Clemence and John Allpress in the England set-up, Gerken looks set to get a call early in the New Year.

"I'm totally speechless, but thrilled to bits at the very thought of getting a chance of playing for my country," said the ecstatic Layer Road scholarship youngster.

"The prospect of representing England with the best of the best is very appealing and it's difficult to imagine that I only became a goalie by mistake when playing for Southend United Under-12's around six years ago.

"I was an outfield player until then - centre-midfield or defence - struggling to get into the Southend team. I only went in goal because our keeper got injured.

"I played a blinder and I haven't regretted the move or looked back since then.

He added: "I've been playing well all season and while I will find it difficult to block the prospect of playing for England out of my mind, I'd like to think I'll be able to keep my feet firmly on the ground. "

U's Director of Youth Football Micky Cook said: "I'm so proud and absolutely delighted by the news. Dean has been a real star for us this season."
