The campaign to reintroduce a bus station in Clacton is gaining momentum and a site close to the town's railway station is proving a strong possibility.

The Evening Gazette revealed earlier this month that Essex County Council was looking at providing a new facility if suitable land could be found.

The move is part of its ten-year plan to get more people out of cars and on to public transport.

The initiative is being backed by residents, groups and businesses in Clacton and various ideas have been put forward.

Consultants have been brought in to prepare a town centre strategy for the resort and public transport is one of the major issues under consideration.

One developer, who does not want to be named, put forward a possible site on a triangular plot of land opposite Clacton Railway Station, which is currently used as a garden area.

Essex County and Tendring councillor Roy Smith forwarded the idea, along with others he had received, to Tendring Council.

He said he has now received a reply which seemed quite positive.

Ray Smith, assistant head of technical and procurement services, said the suggestion from the developer was a possibility.

Clacton lost its bus station in Jackson Road when the site was sold off by Eastern National in 1989.
