Police today appealed for witnesses to an assault which took place in a Braintree pub on New Year's Eve.

A 20-year-old man received serious facial injuries and a broken jaw while out celebrating at the Litten Tree pub in the High Street between midnight and 1.30am the next day.

Staff at the pub were made aware of the assault and contacted the ambulance service and Braintree police.

The man, who came from Woodbridge, Suffolk, was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, where his condition was stable.

Det Con Simon Pateman, of Braintree police, said: "As yet, we are not sure as to how the man sustained his injuries but believe he was attacked by another man, which has left him in a stable position in hospital.

"The Suffolk man had travelled down to Essex to celebrate the New Year with friends.

"We would like to speak with New Year revellers who may have seen anything untoward or suspicious inside the pub and who will certainly be able to assist us with our inquiries."

A spokesman for the Litten Tree pub said: "We noticed someone had come out of the toilets with blood on their face.

"He was sat down while we called the ambulance and the police, who turned up very quickly."

If you witnessed anything suspicious at the pub, contact Braintree police on 01376 551312.
