Former Colchester United striker Steve McGavin has left the managerial hot-seat at Harwich and Parkeston by 'mutual consent'.

The club, which has propped up the league for much of the season, decided McGavin's record of three wins in 13 games wasn't good enough.

McGavin said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed that I haven't been given the opportunity to finish what I was brought to the club to do.

"The commitee held a meeting and decided that the performances on the pitch were not improving and so the club and myself came to an agreement."

McGavin was the fourth Shrimpers boss this season after Adrian Gray, Nigel Box and chairman Tony Armstrong, who was caretaker manager before McGavin's shock appointment in November.

Armstrong will again take charge for tomorrow's match with Norwich United, though assistant Mark Morsley will stay as his number two.

Armstrong said of McGavin's departure: "The committee decided that we weren't going to get out of trouble and agreed to release Steve from his contract.

"The results were disappointing. In the duration we incurred the worst defeat in the club's history when we lost 10-0 at home to Sudbury."
