A cash windfall of £25,000 is to be used to improve pedestrian safety in and around Clacton.

The money has been given to Tendring Council, via Essex County Council, from the Government and is to be splashed out on three schemes.

Work will start on them all soon, as they must be completed within the next three months.

The largest sum of money, some £15,000, will go on a footpath, which will lead from Clacton fire station in the Jaywick direction to the first bus stop on the same side of St John's Road.

That area is currently grassed with no proper footway.

Harry Shearing, Tendring Council portfolio holder for technical and contract services, said it was a chance to make that stretch of road much safer.

"We have a lot of pedestrians use that area of what is a busy road, including pupils going to Colbayns High School and Cann Hall Primary School," he said.

"It is difficult for them with only the verge and a path will improve the situation greatly."

Another £5,000 is to be spent on widening a footpath in Clacton town centre, where there has been traffic congestion from cars parking opposite a new bus stop.

The final £5,000 is to go on a footpath between Lotus Way and Brooklands Gardens in Jaywick.

Mike Badger, senior engineer at Tendring Council, said the schemes must all be finished by March 31.
