Parents of children who play truant from school face fast-track prosecution from this month.
Thurrock has been chosen by the Government as one of eight councils in England to launch the scheme.
Starting later in January, parents will be given one term to ensure their children attend school regularly before facing prosecution with fines up to £2,500 and a possible jail sentence.
"We have already made giant strides in eradicating truancy and fast-tracking prosecutions for irresponsible parents will be another important tool for us as we make sure children receive the education they deserve," said Thurrock's cabinet member for education, Carl Morris.
He added: "Parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are in school."
