West Ham are on the verge of unveiling their first signing of the transfer window, if Lee Bowyer agrees terms at Upton Park today.
The midfielder, who has refused a new contract with current club Leeds, has been in talks this week after the two clubs agreed a fee for his services.
And the mood among Hammers' officials is optimistic that the boyhood fan may be ready to join Glenn Roeder's squad as they battle against relegation.
Club managing director Paul Aldridge spoke last night of "tying up loose ends" after a deal with the Yorkshire side was reached.
And Roeder himself added: "He is a fantastic midfield player and has got the best years of his career in front of him."
