Victorian Burnham-on-Crouch station is to get a spring facelift from First Great Eastern.

First Great Eastern, in partnership with the Strategic Rail Authority, is investing £85,000 on improvements including a new ticket office and waiting room, with refurbishment to the outside and improvements to the forecourt.

Other investment has come from Maldon and Burnham councils who funded the new railings on the footbridge.

The work has already begun on the ticket office, which is in a separate building, and once the station house, which is not needed by First Great Eastern, has been refurbished it will be handed over for community use.

It is hoped voluntary organisations, like the Citizen's Advice Bureau, will use the building.

Although a year behind schedule, it is hoped the restoration work will be completed by the end of this year.

Burnham's mayor Pauline Wells said: "Once it is restored it is going to be a wonderful asset for the town because it is going to be used by the community.

"It should be self-financing so there's no cost to council tax payers. It was difficult to get funding at first but now there is a consortium of people who have put money into it. It is very exciting."

Jill Casswell, communications manager, First Great Eastern, said: "The work will bring much needed improvements to the station and with the investment made by the two councils, the station will be a much better place to visit."
