Southend United supremo Ron Martin today pledged to bring on-the-field stability to Roots Hall.

Martin said this week that he was preparing to make big changes following the Shrimpers' disastrous run of nine defeats in 12 league outings, which has left Blues 17th in Division Three.

But Southend's co-owner confirmed he does not want to make a hasty decision.

"The last thing I want to do is make changes to the structure of the club which will leave the football side of things in disarray," said Martin.

"Between now and the start of next season I will be carrying out a complete overhaul of the football element of the club.

"During the last two years we have successfully moulded the off the field structure of the club and, now we have financial stability, I want to make the same progress on the pitch.

"Any changes I intend to make have obviously been magnified by our recent performances. It is clear that some of the players have underachieved as I believe most of the individuals in our squad are capable of far better performances.

"On the whole I believe the players we have at Roots Hall this season are good enough to lift this club into a play-off position. They are mainly very skilled individuals, but for whatever reason they are not focused 100 per cent of the time."
