Boy racers are being targeted by changes to a Clacton town centre street.

Three humps, extra lighting and pedestrian areas are being installed in Pier Avenue by the end of March to slow down traffic.

Tendring councillors agreed the measures, which will cost £15,000, after hearing there was just one objection from a resident.

John Hughes (Ind Con, St James) was against the scheme as he said it was down to the police to tackle speeding vehicles.

He said: "I am also concerned that if we introduce these measures, it will only move the problem elsewhere.

"Very few people live above the shops in Pier Avenue and if we simply relocate the issue, more people will end up being disturbed."

But Terry Allen, executive leader of the council, said the work was being carried out in response to a demand from residents who were fed up with the boy racers.

"The fact is that there is a problem in the town centre and we cannot rely on the police to be there every five minutes," he said.

Insp Pete Smith, of Clacton police, said he welcomed the council's new initiative.

"Anything which helps slow down the speed of traffic in Clacton town centre will greatly assist us," he added.
