Volunteers are scouring the streets of Southend to bring the homeless in from the cold.

Homeless Action Resource Project has launched a severe weather project to provide emergency housing, sleeping bags, warm clothing and soup to those in need. Sub-zero temperatures could be fatal to those living on the streets.

Viv Roffe, the organisation's day centre manager, said: "Our outreach workers have been out on the streets of Southend since Tuesday trying to locate people sleeping rough.

"We found two men aged between 30 and 40 in the shelters along Southend seafront trying to shield themselves from the conditions and we convinced them to use our emergency accommodation. If not, we provide them with sleeping bags and warm clothing."
