A bomb disposal squad was called in when an unexploded mortar bomb was found by workers at the Shoebury Garrison building site.
The experts from Colchester sealed off the former military site and made the bomb safe.
A spokesman for developer Gladedale said it was the first such find and proved the efficiency of its check system.
