Colchester United favourite Micky Stockwell said today he wants the Layer Road manager's job.
The evergreen U's midfielder revealed exclusively to the Evening Gazette that he has added his name to more than 50 applications already received by the club.
"I've definitely applied for the job," he said.
"I feel that I'm ready for it and I've got the enthusiasm to want to do it.
"At the moment I want to carry on playing, but I have to be realistic at my age. I can't go on forever."
Currently working together, coaching alongside U's caretaker-boss Geraint Williams, former Maldon Plume schoolboy Stockwell will be celebrating his 38th birthday on St Valentine's Day.
He pointed out: "Coaching and management is the next progression and I'm very keen to have a crack at it."
