The Essex History Fair could bring the past to life in the centre of Braintree next year

Essex County Council is considering Braintree for the biennial event to be held as a street fair which could open up the town to new visitors.

It could bring together historical re-enactment groups, street entertainers, stalls from Essex museums, history groups, Essex record office and library services.

The fair is held at different places around the county.

Braintree is being looked at for June 2004 after the success of the last fair at Chelmsford, where the day's events included medieval street theatre.

Miriam Stead, county council outreach services manager, said it was held in a town centre as an experiment to attract people who might not normally go to such an event.

She said: "It would be nice if it could happen because Braintree is so central to the county and it brings people in to Braintree to see what it has to offer as a town as well as anything else."

But Braintree Council warned 2004 was not the best year as it would coincide with work to revamp Market Place.

Richard Tincknell, executive member for leisure and culture, said: "This has been a hugely successful event when held elsewhere in the county and we would love to bring this event to Braintree.

"However, there are potential practical difficulties that may arrive out of the planned refurbishment of Braintree town centre.

"We will be looking into this in the near future to see if it is possible to bring the history fair to Braintree, as this is an event that is ideal for town centre such as Braintree."
