Mersea Island could become home to a new heritage site - dedicated to chalets.

Coopers Beach Chalet Society is hoping to create a "chalet heritage site" on a plot of land off Broman's Lane, East Mersea, next to Cudmore Grove Country Park.

The aim is to move the 26 chalets currently at Coopers Beach to the new site, between Cudmore Grove and Cosways, and turn it into a preservation centre for chalets.

The society has managed to get a 1,750m by 85m land parcel arranged but now wait on a decision from Colchester Council to see whether the idea can become a reality.

The 26 chalets vary in size from between 10ft and 12ft and 36ft to 40ft in length.

The reason for the move is the chalets have to be moved because of new holiday homes on the Great British Holiday Parks site.

A spokesperson for the society, in a letter to the council, said: "This is the last chance to retain and preserve the only remaining chalets in the borough and a historic link in the chain of coastal development."
