Southend United manager Rob Newman is hoping to tie up a deal for a striker before Bristol Rovers visit Roots Hall on Saturday.

The Blues chief is keeping tight-lipped about who his targets are but one is believed to be a Second Division player and the other is Basingstoke Town forward Craig McAllister.

"We have a couple of irons in the fire and are hoping to get one of them in before the weekend," said Newman.

"And with the Tes situation we definitely want one in before next weekend when he will be suspended after his red card on Saturday.

"We are on the case and there is the possibility of someone coming in and the other would be on a loan deal."

Newman also has a couple of other names on his wanted list in case he is unable to secure deals for his main targets.

Striker Tes Bramble's red card for violent conduct against Hull City defender Marc Joseph was the only sour point of the Shrimpers' 3-0 win over the Tigers.

Southend are keen to appeal against the sending off but are running up against a brick wall in their search for evidence.

"The video replay is inconclusive because Tes is not in the picture -- it only shows the penalty taker and those to the left, not those on the right," explained Newman.
