A 24-year old man was left shocked when robbers threatened him with a knife and then stole two bracelets worth £500.
The robbery took place in Carlton Road, Clacton, just before 9pm yesterday. Insp Alan Beckett, of Clacton police, said the victim was walking down the road when he was approached by the two robbers.
He said: "They asked if he had a cigarette and the man said he did not have one. Then they pulled out a knife and told him to give them his jewellery."
Mr Beckett said the robbers took the jewellery and ran off towards the Valley Road area. The weapon is described as a butterfly-style knife which comes out at the sides.
Both robbers are described as in their early 20s. The first was about 5ft 9ins tall. He had brown hair and a goatee beard. He wore a black Nike baseball cap, dark-coloured Puffa jacket and dark-coloured combat trousers. He wore white Reebok trainers.
The second robber was about 6ft tall. He wore a Burberry-style baseball cap, a light green-coloured Parker-style jacket and dark tracksuit trousers.
Witnesses should ring Clacton police on 01255 221312
