Anna Whitfield will be flying the Essex flag with Natasha Bailey when they contest the English Schools Cross Country Championships next month.
The Basildon AC member was called up into the Essex team for the March 8 event, despite finishing tenth at the county junior girls qualifying race at Chelmsford.
Automatic spots go to the top eight but two runners who finished above Anna were not eligible to run in the English event at Brighton as they are year seven pupils.
So 14-year-old Anna --who, like second-placed Southend High pupil Natasha, was representing Southend District -- was promoted to a berth in the Essex team.
