Kart racer Ashley Smith picked up his Kent Championship minimax trophy and immediately turned his attention to contesting the British Super One series.

Thirteen-year-old Ashley, from Thundersley, won the Kent competition at Buckmore Park, Chatham, by 152 points and was presented with his trophy by McLaren F1 test driver Darren Turner.

But in a season that saw his race kart and equipment stolen in September, Ashley, his dad Peter and mentor Roy Reyland are focusing on preparing for the six-round Super One competition.

"I think we have done exceedingly well considering some of the setbacks we had," said Peter.

"Ashley has only been racing properly for 18 months doing the MSA and he's gone out in his first full year and we have won it.

"We are looking forward to next season when we will be in the British Championship. Ashley's name is up in chatrooms on websites saying he is one driver to look out for this year."

Roy guided his son Glenn to national championship glory and was impressed by Ashley's commitment. When his kart was stolen, Roy -- who is the boss of Cheshunt-based First Karts UK -- lent him the equipment to finish the Kent Championship.

"Considering it's his first year he has done very well but next year will be harder for him," admitted Roy.

"He is going to find it difficult but after two or three rounds he will settle in and he should make the top 15."

Ashley has been sponsored by Rayleigh's Hudson's Bar-bers but anyone else interested in supporting him can contact Paul Alton on 01268 469399.
