A Tilbury taxi operator has been ordered to pay almost £2,000 after being found guilty of running unlicensed private hire cabs.

James Pastfield, who owns Civic Cars based in Civic Square, did not attend the hearing before Grays magistrates.

He was found guilty of taking a booking for a private hire vehicle without the appropriate licence and using an unlicensed vehicle in March 2002. The court ordered him to pay a total of £1,957 in fines and costs.

Thurrock Council environmental health team leader Phil Easteal said: "For reasons of public safety it is vital operators, vehicles and drivers are properly licensed by the local authority."

Staff from the council's regulation department continue to investigate unlicensed cab firms trading in the district. Last week, the council warned of the dangers of using them.

The council's licensing team is concerned because unlicensed cabs have not had to meet the same stringent standards as licensed cabs and may be dangerous.

Taxi users have been urged to be cautious before jumping into a cab and to check if the vehicle is licensed before travelling anywhere in it.

Council licensing officer Paul Buttell said: "The operation of taxis and private hire vehicles is controlled by the council.

"It is essential vehicles are registered with us to ensure they meet all safety requirements.

"Passengers should look out for the yellow or green licence plate on the rear of the vehicle and door stickers that show it is licensed by Thurrock Council."
