Braintree District Council was this week backing a bid by the RSPCA to slow the growing menace of feral cats.

The local authority is supporting a visit by the charity's neutering clinic which will offer cut-price operations in a bid to keep down the population of unwanted wild cats.

The mobile clinic will be offering neutering for cats at just £10 per animal at the Forest Road Community Centre from Monday to Thursday next week. Cats should be brought along between 9am and 10am and should not have been fed for the previous 12 hours.

Owners can book an operation by calling Pauline King at the Witham area office on 01376 551414, extension 3282.

Meanwhile, the RSPCA has praised Braintree District Council for its animal welfare work. The authority was in the forefront of caring for animals in its area, the charity said in a new booklet.

Joceline Tran, the charity's local government compaigns officer, said "Much of the work of an organisation like Braintree council goes unnoticed by the public, yet they play a key role in looking after local pets and other captive animals."
