Youngsters were celebrating today after raising almost £30,000 for a new youth centre in just ten weeks.

Tireless Legacy XS fundraisers have been working hard since Castle Point councillors unanimously agreed the £125,000 project should go ahead.

It is now only a matter of time before the centre comes to life on South Benfleet playing fields, providing it is granted planning permission next Tuesday.

Delighted project leader Peter Hillman said: "It has so far been a fantastic effort and if we carry on at this rate it won't be long until we have all the money we need.

"Raising almost £30,000 is some achievement when you bear in mind we only started fundraising towards the end of last year."

The Rev Anthony Rose, of St George's Church, in Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet - the Legacy XS home - called for people to pull together and show their support.

He said: "In raising a significant sum as quickly as possible, the input of local business is vital.

"What we really need are donations of finance, goods and services from the business community all of which will be gratefully accepted and publicly acknowledged with a plaque in the lobby of the centre."

The quarter-of-an-acre complex at the rear of Richmond Hall, off Benfleet's High Road, will give young people a place to skateboard, ride BMX bikes and roller skate. It is also planned to house a coffee bar, pool tables and computers.

Anyone who can help should call the Legacy XS project office on 01268 792088.
