Nurses in Basildon's hard-pressed medical assessment unit have come in for a big vote of thanks from a woman who was rushed there as an emergency just before last week's big chill.
Brenda Wiggins, of St George's Avenue, Grays, ended up in the unit when an infection spread to her kidneys.

The 58-year-old account executive, said: "I had been sick so much I was dehydrated. My temperature was very high and I was completely doolally - not with it at all.
Mrs Wiggins said there were so many people in the unit she had to wait about four hours for a bed to become available. But despite being rushed off their feet, staff remained courteous.
While Mrs Wiggins was on a drip, she said one patient became very abusive and disruptive, but staff were unfazed and endlessly sympathetic and kind.
She added: "There were also a lot of old people who were very ill. They take a lot of looking after, especially at night when there are more patients coming in all the time. But staff were all on the ball and I was impressed."
